I photographed this with a Nikon D3 and a Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 while covering the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The look of loss in his expression, combined with the dirt and grit that covered him really spoke to me in terms of just how much this race meant to him, and how hard it must be to lose on such a large stage.
