Taha Khaled, a former student, survived living under ISIS’s occupation for years in his hometown of Qayara and later Mosul. During this time he was captured four times by the extremist group and managed to narrowly escape execution, suffering only a minor injury when the bullet grazed the side of his skull. He managed to evade detection for months through the help of a fake ID. Following the liberation of Mosul from ISIS control Taha’s hometown of Qayara was also freed from occupation and he was able to finally go home and reunite with his mother, who had long thought her son had been executed.
