La hermita en San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
A peculiar islet in the Basque Country along the northern Spanish coast. The monastery dates to the 10th century with burials from early 9th century through medieval times found on site. It’s history is as peculiar as its appearance and location. A formidable standoff by a handful of basque knights against the kingdom of Castilla. Accounts of vast witch hunts during the times of the inquisition and the unfortunate demise of a hermit at the hands of Sir Francis Drake led to the islet becoming a cove for pirates. Today it serves as a small church rebuilt during the late 70’s and in popular culture its more recognizable as the true life rendition of Dragonstone the home of the Targaryen Dragon lords in HBO’s series “Game of Thrones” based on George R.R. Martin’s novels: A song of ice & fire.
The photo was shot after a challenging steep hike down the cliff in windy conditions with partially cloudy skies. It presented a bit of a challenge to maintain a good compositional location due to the wind catching the filter holder and shaking the camera on long exposures but a las the weather smiled upon us and we were able to capture a long exposure during the last minutes of blue hour on the bay of Biscay.
