Astraeus Hygrometricus, the Barometer Earth Star Mushroom! It's a rare find here in Connecticut. These are last year's crop. They have dried up into these octopus like beings, that are slowly being carried away by the creeping mosses. When it's moist, they open. When it dries, they crumple back up into a ball. Over time, this stretching of their legs would also resemble walking as they scuttle across the forest floor.
