The Burj al-Arab is a hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is the fourth tallest hotel in the world; however, 39% of its total height is accounted for by unoccupiable space. The Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island 280 metres from Jumeirah Beach and is connected to the mainland by a private, curved bridge. The shape of the building is designed to mimic the sail of a ship. It has a helipad near the roof at a height of 210 metres above the ground. The hotel has a height of 321 metres.
The architect is the Briton Tom Wright. He is best known for the Burj al Arab in Dubai, which quickly became an architectural icon and a Dubai landmark.
