Railroad station in Liège-Guillemins

New building from 2006

With the advent of high-speed trains, the old Liège-Guillemins station from 1958 was no longer considered up to date: the platforms were too narrow and too curved, and the entire station area looked run-down. Furthermore, the space was too tight for the rapidly increasing passenger flows and there was a lack of comfort. In addition, the many level crossings restricted train traffic. Furthermore, the platforms were not long enough for modern long-distance trains. As it was no longer worth renovating the old station, it was decided to demolish it and build a new one.
Following an international competition, the project was awarded to architect Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava has already designed several train stations. He designed the new part of the Stadelhofen station in Zurich, the Lucerne station, the Lyon-Saint-Exupéry TGV station, the Oriente intermodal station in Lisbon and the PATH World Trade Center station in New York.
