Tempodrom
The Tempodrom (a circus tent) is a Berlin venue that was initially founded in 1980 by the heiress and former nurse Irene Moessinger as an alternative venue on the west side of Potsdamer Platz, in the immediate vicinity of the former Berlin Wall. Moessinger realized a lifelong dream by investing the funds from an inheritance in a circus tent. After just one year, in March 1981, the circus was bankrupt. With financial aid from the Berlin Senate, the business was able to continue, and the cabaret artist Holger Klotzbach, who organized the circus equipment, was also involved in founding the Tempodrom in 1980.
The new Tempodrom
With private donations, a compensation payment and state subsidies, a concrete building in the shape of a circus tent was erected on the site of the former Anhalter Bahnhof and reopened as the New Tempodrom in December 2001.
