Can This Affordable Canon Lens Keep Up With a More Demanding Sensor?

On paper, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is a remarkably versatile and affordable lens, offering a wide aperture, macro capabilities, and image stabilization, making it useful for a huge range of applications. Can it keep up with the more demanding, pixel-dense sensor found on the EOS R7 mirrorless camera? This quick and helpful video review takes a look.

Coming to you from Christopher Frost, this great video review takes a look at the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM lens on the EOS R7 mirrorless camera. With a 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor, the EOS R7 places a lot of demand on a lens' ability to resolve detail, particularly for a relatively affordable one. That being said, the 35mm f/1.8 comes with a nice range of features, including:

  • Super Spectra coating for reduced ghosting, fewer flares, and deeper contrast
  • Optical Image Stabilizer offering up to five stops of compensation
  • 1:2 maximum magnification with a minimum focusing distance of 6.7 inches
  • STM stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocus useful for both stills and video work
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm for smoother bokeh

While the lens isn't perfect, especially on a high-resolution sensor, it is still quite versatile. Check out the video above for Frost's full thoughts.
