When it comes to filmmaking, being able to see what you are shooting clearly and accurately is important and will affect the output greatly. Trying to judge your work on a small screen on the back of the camera is not conducive to high-quality results. This is why additional monitors are a key component for many filmmakers. Controlling the action from these screens has not always been possible on all camera models.
In this video from Lee, he reviews the new LH5C 5.4-inch monitor from Portkeys and explains that having this level of functionality on Sony cameras has been a must-have feature, but it was not previously available. You could view the scene on a larger display, but you could not control any camera features until now, and this change will influence how many Sony content creators approach their filmmaking.
This monitor also has the ability to load custom LUTs, allowing you to see exactly what you are recording in real time, and it offers hue adjustments on the fly. With a brightness of 800 nits, it is not on the high-power end of monitors, but it will work well for indoor use.
Having a larger screen allows you to be more precise with your filmmaking. At a resolution of 1,920 x 1,152, this 5.4-inch screen can deliver:
- 10-bit color depth
- A contrast ratio of 1,000:1
- Power either from its own onboard battery or, as Lee demonstrates, directly from his Sony camera
Some users may also need onboard recording, but this monitor does not have that option. It is a monitor and not a recording device. At 162 g, the Portkeys LH5C will not add much weight to your camera bag, and in this real-world review, Lee shows how useful it can be for all camera brands and especially for Sony users.
