Is the New Fujifilm 16-55mm f/2.8 II a Prime Replacement?

The Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II is here, and it brings some valuable updates. If you need a reliable zoom for both stills and video, this lens offers a lot to think about.

Coming to you from John Branch IV Photography, this fantastic video explains how the new XF 16-55mm f/2.8 II improves on the original. Branch emphasizes how lightweight and manageable the lens feels, which is crucial for long shooting sessions or travel. He mentions using it casually with family and sees it as an ideal travel lens. The reduced weight compared to its predecessor makes a meaningful difference in day-to-day use. The wide focal range is versatile enough to match the lenses Branch normally uses for weddings, which could even make it a contender to replace his usual prime setup.

The sharpness of the lens is another standout feature, particularly when paired with high-resolution cameras like the Fujifilm X-T5 or X-H2. Branch notes how well the lens resolves details, ensuring crisp results even without post-processing. The autofocus performance also holds up well, tracking moving subjects during real-world use. The addition of optical stabilization, combined with in-body stabilization on newer Fujifilm cameras, offers smooth and steady footage for handheld video recording.

Branch points out that the new de-clickable aperture ring makes this lens an appealing option for video shooters. This feature allows users to switch between a traditional clicked aperture for stills and a smooth, silent adjustment for video. It eliminates noise and visual jumps in the footage when changing settings mid-shot, something Branch appreciates even as a photographer who only occasionally dabbles in video.

The combination of a versatile zoom range, optical stabilization, and refined handling makes it a solid upgrade. If you’ve been holding out for a zoom that can replace multiple primes or want smoother control for video, this may be the lens for you. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Branch.

Correction: this lens, as its predecessor, does not have image stabilization.

It will when it has F2 instead of F2.8.
