24-70mm f/2.8 lenses are the standard tool of choice for countless creatives, offering a versatile focal length range in tandem with a wide maximum aperture, making them suitable for a huge range of applications. However, such lenses are rarely cheap, often running north of $2,000. The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G trades a stop of aperture for extra reach and a significant discount, making it an intriguing alternative. This great video review takes a look at the lens and the sort of performance and image quality you can expect from it in practice.
Coming to you from Stefan Malloch, this excellent video review takes a look at the new Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens. At $1,098, the 20-70mm f/4 is a nice alternative to more expensive 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses. While you lose a stop of aperture, you gain 4mm at the wide end. That might seem like a small difference, but it is worth considering that a 24mm focal length equates to a 84.1-degree diagonal angle of view, while 20mm is a 94.5-degree diagonal angle of view, meaning you can fit significantly more of a scene into the frame. For genres like architectural or landscape photography, where an f/2.8 aperture is rarely necessary, that extra reach will certainly be appreciated, as will the lower cost. Check out the video above for Malloch’s full thoughts on the lens.
