If I had to give a piece of advice to photographers new to working with artificial lighting, it would simply be to not spend too much. You can put together a nice kit consisting of a few speedlights and modifiers for a couple hundred dollars. You do not need multi-thousand-dollar professional monolights and modifiers, and in fact, you might find as you grow and progress that speedlights can handle everything you need to do.
