Photographer Chris Schmid's video series "Off the Beaten Track" take a behind the scenes look at his travels as an outdoor and travel photographer. In his latest episode, he travels to Masai Mara National Reserve in Narok County, Kenya. The park is named after tha Maasai people, and known for it's lions, cheetahs, and annual migration of gazelles, zebras, and wildebeest.
Today NASA's Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite captured an event that will only happen twice a year due to the orbit of both the satellite and moon's orbits. DSCOVR, which is floating in space 1 Million miles away, took the images between 3:50PM and 8:45PM on July 16th. NASA will soon begin a constant, daily observation of Earth to provide photos and collect weather information for NOAA using and the satellite's camera "EPIC," a 4 megapixel camera.
Every year National Geographic's Traveler hosts a photo competition to see some of the best photos from all corners of the world. National Geographic had almost 18,000 submissions, in the categories of Travel Portraits, Outdoor Scenes, Sense of Place, and Spontaneous Moments. The Editors chose only 10 for the top prizes. We have already seen a lot of news coverage on drones this week, including one flying over the White House and the horrible story about drones preventing helicopters from putting out wildfires in California. A new video recently went viral on Youtube showing a drone flying and firing a handgun. The video and contraption were created by 18-year-old Austin Haughwout, who has come under immense scrutiny.
Hearing the name Casey Neistat gives mixed reactions from people when I bring him up in conversation. Some people think his work is a gimmick, or can't get over that he smashed a perfectly good Canon with an axe. Personally, I am a huge fan of Neistat, because whatever he's doing, it's working. Seattle's Mayor, Edward B. Murray, has proclaimed this day, June 19th, DAY OF PHOTOGRAPHY! The Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW) is holding their annual photo competition, Long Shot, where photographers from all over the world can submit their best images shot today. For just 20 bucks, you can register and enter up to five submissions, where a panel of judges will rate your images. Each Long Shot participant will have one image selected from their submissions, which will be printed and hung in the gallery showing on Sunday.
Several weeks ago, Fstoppers writer, Rebecca Britt reviewed the first volume of a fresh, captivating tutorial called Mastering Lighting. It's creator, Nick Saglimbeni, has an extensive background in both photography and cinematography and a great understanding of how to artistically light a scene.
Last month we had a contest and asked the Fstoppers Community to submit their best photos in five different categories. The winners of each category would win their choice of three Fstoppers Flash Discs or one free tutorial from the Fstoppers Store. We were very impressed with all of the talent from the community and were delighted to see such a wide spectrum of images in each category.
