Over the past few years we’ve seen some amazing time-lapse cinematography styles and techniques really shine. From hyper lapse edits, winding their way through crowded cities over the course of day and night, to beautiful star trails and milky way shots that truly seem out of this world, new ideas and techniques are always being tested and improved upon.
For 8 months, Jamie Brightmore has been experimenting and developing an aerial time-lapse cinematography technique called ‘Satlapse’, because of it's resemblance to satellite imagery. Jamie has been experimenting since November 2014 using a DJI Phantom 2, GoPro Hero 4 and an H3-3D Gimbal. The technique is true time-lapse, rather than just speeding up video footage, to allow for shutter dragging using ND filters. According to Jamie, the technique requires some specifics including a reliable, stable multi-rotor aircraft, exacting weather conditions, a time-lapse camera, capable of very short intervals, a location with action conducive to shorter time span captures, UAS piloting experience, extensive post production and bucket loads of patience.
With the explosion in drone use we’ve seen in recent years, its refreshing to see new techniques and ideas. Jamie’s time-lapse shows an amazing look down on the human ant farm from a unique perspective. Love it!
