Shooting a GoPro from a Cannon.. and Breaking It

After successfully shooting a GoPro HERO Session on an arrow, Niko (from Sam and Niko) wanted to launch the GoPro at a farther distance to portray an arrow flying over some distance in a battle. With the added weight from the GoPro, the arrow didn’t fly as far as it should of to give an accurate flight.

To get the GoPro to fly even further, Niko wanted to use their built master blaster air cannon to launch the action camera. First, Sam built and tested a custom 3D printed housing for the GoPro to be in. The first prototype housing didn’t last past the initial testing. Wren took over and made the second housing, which worked a lot better.

I was pretty interested in watching the footage of the GoPro being hurled into the sky. The first launch was successful at approximately 84 mph. The second shot wasn’t as successful, shooting the GoPro straight up resulted in the death of it. Apparently having the GoPro travel vertical for 240 feet will kill them, so probably not a great idea to do that again. However that didn’t stop the team, day two they returned for a few more test launches.

My favorite flight of their test would have to be from day two’s upward shot, I won’t spoil it for you. You can jump to 6:10 to see the set up and flight from that. You can also jump to 8:02 to see the different air cannon footages stabilized.

If you missed the GoPro on the Arrow video, you can check it below.

Eh. Exactly how i'd expect footage to look if a g opro was thrown into the air.
