The Importance of Photographing Shelter Pets and How to Do It

There are millions of wonderful pets in shelters at any given time, all waiting for someone to take them home and love them forever. One of the best ways to give back with your camera skills is to photograph shelter pets to increase their chances of being adopted. These great videos will show you the importance of doing so and offer you some helpful tips and tricks for doing so.

Coming to you from Adam Goldberg with Westcott Lighting, these two awesome videos will show you the importance of photographing shelter pets and offer you a range of tips and tricks for doing so. Studies have shown that pets with a well-lit, inviting photo of themselves are more likely to be adopted. Unfortunately, most shelters in the United States face chronic underfunding and under-staffing, and overworked employees often simply do not have the time or capabilities to produce such images. This is where volunteering your skills, equipment, and time can make a huge difference in the life of an animal in need. It can also be a ton of fun!

Check out both videos for more, and consider heading over to your local animal shelter to offer your services.

I've volunteered my time photographing shelter dogs for Paws For Life Utah for the last 2 years. It's sometimes messy, and sometimes amusing, but always rewarding.

Awwwww....what a sweetie!

Hope your pic got them adopted to a forever home quickly! Thanks for doing what you do!

I'm afraid I'd be bringing too many of them home myself!

Oh I definitely would!

Thanks for this. It is something I have been thinking about for a bit and I do have the time to do it.

I actually started as a volunteer starting out doing photos for Orange County Animal Services which led to a staff photography job for Orange County Government. I handle content for Animal Services now. It is truly a rewarding job and I would never trade anything else for it because you get to save lives every day. However, we have shifted towards IG Reels and Tiktoks that have been getting way more traction than photos.
