The Best Apps for Planning Photo Shoots

Smartphones are incredibly powerful tools, and they offer a ton of apps and features that make them one of the most useful things a photographer can carry with them. With the huge number of apps out there, it can be tricky to know which is right for you and your work. This fantastic video tutorial features an experienced photographer walking you through some of the best options.

Coming to you from Mark Duffy, this great video tutorial will show you some of the best apps for photographers out there. My personal favorite is PhotoPills. For example, I will be in the area of totality for the April 8, 2024 eclipse, and thanks to the app's advanced planning features, I already know exactly how it will be positioned relative to the local geography and have even been able to plan my compositions thanks to the AR features. It is nice to have confidence and peace of mind in my plan of attack for what will be a once-in-a-lifetime event that will only last for a few minutes. If you haven't explored some of the apps out there, be sure to download a few. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Duffy.

So you're taking note of what Youtube determined the chapter names should be and ignored what I said or did you just skip through the chapter names instead of watching the video? I don't usually use chapters and Youtube has now started to generate them automatically so I have to thank you for bringing that problem to light.

With the links I figured giving the names would be enough for people as I'm an android users and would have links for them handy enough. So to please you and not have you think 500 views on a video brings me all cha-ching, I've included links to each app.

Your attitude on this comment is the reason I stopped using the Fstoppers site, as a simple DM would've solved this without you sounding like a troll.

"windy" pro app is lot better for tide, swell, direction of wind and many other.. It is app created for water sports as well as aviation. It's €50/year, but well worth the money if you serious about photography. There are no limitations and you get tidal prediction for any place you need. I think Mark made this video before as far as I know. Exposure calculator is inside Photopills. Lee, Nisi... They all have their own apps, but no need for it. Only thing about Photopills exposure calculator I am missing is the negative filter calculations ( going at sunset from 10 stop to 6 stop ND) I have emailed Photopills, but still not there.

"Clear outside" app for UK, Scotland and Ireland for water

Thanks dude, never heard of the Windy Pro app and had wondered how people like Max Malloy was able to see the swell information. Then again around Dundalk we don't get waves like the west haha.

You're also right I have a released a video like this before but that was back in 2017 when I still had my long beard, so there better apps now since then and I wanted to do a new one.

What's the Clear Outside app you mentioned?

Clear outside is weather forecast Mark

Thanks Alex, delighted to have my video featured. Really appreciate your support
