Photographers: What's Your Workstation Look Like?

Photographers: What's Your Workstation Look Like?

Some people are naturally very cluttered while others try to take a very minimalist approach. Does your workspace reflect your personality?

You sit down to get some work done; maybe you're editing, answering emails, ordering products, watching tutorials, or all of the above. Let's assume that you're at home, in the zone, rather than at a coffee shop (unless that's where you always work). What's your space look like?

This week I thought it would be fun to engage in a little bit of show and tell. I thought that it would be interesting for readers to post a photo of their workspace in the comments below. The place where all the magic happens. Does your space look like a tornado just passed through or do you keep a sleek and squeaky clean modern vibe all the time? Are there notepads taped to the walls with to-do lists? When you sit down to get your work done, where do you go?

Now full disclosure, I did just move halfway across the country so my space is still fresh and new. I tend to keep my space simple and to the point. I am definitely a bit OCD when it comes to my desk. I want enough room for my keyboard and mouse plus my editing tablet all on the same desk at the same time. I'm left handed so I have my tablet on the left and I can still use the mouse with my right hand simultaneously. One drawer is enough to have my “extras” like pens and paper, USB drives, external hard drives, business cards, etc. I am definitely the type of person who makes to-do lists. I love notepads and writing things out, so those go in the drawer too.

I'm a desktop rather than a laptop type of guy; the simple at-home setup is pretty much where all of my work goes down. The desk looks nice enough, assembled by yours truly from Target. Having a space that I think looks great helps me de-stress and get things done in short order. When my space gets cluttered, I feel like I tend to start freaking out so I have found that simplicity works best for my work space.

What does your space look like? Take a photo and leave a comment below with the image. Make sure your photo is PG (be aware of what's on your walls, desk, etc). Whether your area looks crazy cluttered or super sleek, there is no judgment here. Show us where you make it all happen. What about your space, if anything, reflects your personality?

I hate wires more than anything so I guess that shows in my setup. I like to keep my desk really minimal and clean. And no, it's not just that photo, it's always that clean.

Yasss I love it <3 I need to find a simple clean way to hide all my wires too

Thanks! I just used the backboard to hide the monitor wires and signum rack from ikea below the table.

are those Dell 4K monitors?

No the middle one is Asus pro art monitor and the other two just regular 1080p acer monitors. I have to update all of my monitors at some point because the middle one is the only one that shows good colors.

This is ocd heaven, neeeeeddd

would love to update the monitors to be exactly the same, or 1 or 2 ultrawides would do as well.

Looks a lot like ours - gotta love Ikea.

Yes, that's all ikea haha xd the desk is kitchen counter top actually. Didn't find anything that big in the actual table section.

Same for ours, it's the Karlby butcher block.

Looks amazing!

thanks! ^^

Big desk, clean space.

Very nice :)

Pretty much my setup everyday give or take a MBP depending on if I'm coding or retouching.

Extra points for the Will Oldham portrait.

Thanks and extra points for you, because you know who he is - Haha!

I've been a fan since his Palace Brothers days!

Nice! He lives in my hometown pretty close to me. I've been fortunate to experience many secret shows. I also worked with him and did the photography and layout for the "Funtown Comedown" album. The portrait on my website of him was something we shot back in June or July of this year. It was my favorite shot, but wasn't chosen for publication. Other portraits from that session will be in publication in another 6-12months or so, but I can't say what yet.

Is that Louisville, KY? Great music scene. Nice work!

Thank you and yes, I currently live in Louisville, KY. Although maybe not for much longer.

Also, he just did a duet with Kira Skov that was released a few days ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1v-SJQD-Oo

I live at home in a small place and I share a room with my brother and I pay too much of the rent to just move out without hurting my family's financial situation. So until I find a way out I am working on my bed with my laptop and a film scanner for my film negatives. I was told to move off of my bed and work on an actual desk space by the folks and I could think is "Where the hell am I going to put it?"

Clutter is my life. To the right is printer. Scanner/copier/4x6 printer lives in another room. We are moving this June so I'll have a chance to neaten ( can you say Snowball in hell?)😆

Haha, snowball in hell :P

Wow, full blown office! Nice!

Sweet!

Love it!

This is my setup. I love my Eizo and Epson. so good to have prints and screen color's look the same.

I'm pretty cluttered. every couple of months I hide things. this is not one of those months...

Loads of prints on the walls, very cool :)

Hey the "Bean", all right!

That's a pretty cool space.

"...every couple of months I hide things." Love it. And obviously honest too.

My current workstation.

My current setup, loving the UpDesk

Monster PC under the desk, two monitors, Palette pads and AKG K240 studio headsets. Mainly used for video editing.

How do you like the Palette? Do you use it with Lightroom or just Premiere?

Interesting setup for the monitors - standing desk, or a fairly high chair? I would think it would put the hurt on the neck a bit.

The Palette is nice. I mainly use it for video editing and grading. No issue with the monitor on top. Actually I don't like to have them side by side, I always feel that none is correctly positioned in the middle. I find it easier to look up and down instead of turning my head right or left. Normal chair, but the desk is a bit high (I can adjust the legs size).

The first two photos are our main setup in Korea, but back in November the wife and kids moved back to the states, so the third photo is of her workstation at her parents home. Details on the home setup are at the Imgur link, the ones for the mobile setup are below. The HP is a very solid laptop for the price, and is beautiful to boot (love the dark grey/gold color scheme).

You don't use those lights when you're working though right?

Heck no.

No way.

The first two images is a pretty neat Desk! What Table (Plate) is this? This isn't Ikea right?

The furniture is all Ikea. Karlby butcher block.
