So now you have money left over to buy $700 worth of adapters to make the computer useful.

Fortunately, an OWC USB-C dock for $150 is probably all you need. Better than a bunch of ports on your laptop, anyway, because you can unplug just one thing when you want to take your laptop off your desk.
Also, in a few years everything is going to be USB-C/Thunderbolt anyway, so your snark about it now is just short-sighted.

Got one. Love it. The adapters aren't that expensive, but the computer is worth having to buy a few.

What this article doesn't note is that these are 2016 models.

Seems like a good deal, but I dont really think its $700 worth of savings. A similarly built current Macbook Pro on apples site is only $2,599.00 and you get an extra .1 GHz as well.
