Do You Return to Images to Correct Your Mistakes?

None of us are perfect, and we all have images in which we wish we could have corrected a mistake or taken a different creative route. This great video examines the idea of taking the time to return to locations to fix past mistakes and to improve your photography.

Coming to you from Chris Sale, this excellent video examines the idea of returning to past locations to correct your mistakes and to create better images. I am a big fan of returning to locations multiple times simply for the benefit of practicing the ability to create multiple looks from a single subject, a skill that will benefit any photographer. This allows you to break free from your typical creative tendencies and become a more proficient, versatile photographer, which in turn will allow you to step into less ideal conditions and shooting scenarios and still be able to thrive and create successful photos. Sale takes it a step further by returning specifically to a location to correct a past mistake. This allows him to not only evaluate his errors in an abstract sense, but to actually put those lessons into practice, which can go a long way in improving one's work. Check out the video above for Sale's full thoughts.

Definitely. Except I'm 3000 miles from some of those haunts now. For years, though... I went to many of the same locations. Saying to myself, remember to check the meter this time! Or to catch a different weather pattern... always changing on the coast.

I appreciate the information you curate, Alex. It keeps my confidence steady in more than my photography hobby. :)

This is something that I do from time to time. More than making corrections, I go at different times to get different perspectives.

I spend most of my life returning to past photo locations, trying to redo images I've taken in the past. But I focus on wildlife, so even though I spend many weeks a year in the old haunts, trying to get better photos than I did before, the animals often don't give me an opportunity for a re-try. But sometimes they do ..... I guess I'll never improve on past results if I don't get out and at least give it a try.

Do it all the time.

A number of years ago I shot a series of images for a panoramic while in Istanbul, taken from Galata Tower. I used a Nikon D3 and the Nikon 14-24 2.8. Upon returning home, I really didn't like the results. I returned to Istanbul a year later (Just to visit friends), bringing with me A D3x and shot it again with the 24-70 f2.8.

Short version: MUCH better.
