Composition is a notoriously hard subject to pin down, because unlike technical parameters like aperture or shutter speed, we can't speak of it in objective, quantifiable terms. For me, a lot of it comes down to asking what the intentions of an image are. Where are you trying to direct the viewer's attention? What parts of the frame help to guide it there? What parts of the frame interfere with it? Being clear on these ideas in your head can help a lot in building an image, and the more you practice asking these questions, the better you'll get at creating compositions that work instead of trying to happen upon a successful scene.
