How Even a Project About a Dull Subject Can Improve Your Photography

We've heard quite a bit of the importance of shooting personal projects to both growing as a photographer and promoting one's work. This interesting project takes it a step further, using an unusual subject to force the photographer to really explore his ability to create interesting images.

Coming to you from Craig Roberts of e6 Vlogs, this awesome video follows him as he shoots a personal project on flyovers (overpasses), which eventually lands him a magazine feature. As he himself says, it's a "dull" subject, but the project was never about that. Rather, by forcing himself to focus on something over and over, he really had to explore numerous ways to dig deeper and create more interesting compositions and edits without relying on a constant supply of fresh and interesting subjects. In that sense, choosing such a subject is even better, as it really encourages you to focus on using your photographic techniques and creativity to their fullest extents. And of course, when you return to more traditional subjects, you'll have a stronger sense of how to shoot them. So, think of an unusual subject and commit yourself to shooting it for a while; you might be surprised by the results!

Yes. Architecture is the dullest. Don't shoot it, you might just die of boredom. I promise. I've been doing it for years. You don't want to do this to yourself. It's just terrible...really the worst.

Ahahaha I guess that’s one way to keep competition away.
