How to Pose People Who Aren't Models

When you're first starting out, you can't just call up an agency and expect to shoot with a model. Most of us started by grabbing friends and bribing them to stand in front of our lens. Of course, most of our friends aren't trained in posing, however. This helpful video will show how to pose people who aren't models.

Coming to you from Mango Street, this great video gives some more tips on working with people who aren't professionals when it comes to posing (if you missed part one of this great series, check it out here). Of all the tips, I personally think making someone comfortable before you ever pull out the camera is the most important. If you've ever had your own portrait or headshot taken, you probably noticed the photographer had a conversation with you before you ever started shooting, and at some point, the camera seemed to just naturally come out. This sort of approach helps to alleviate the performance anxiety your model might have regarding stepping in front of the camera and is likely to get you better and more organic results. So, come up with a concept, grab a friend, and get out there and shoot!

I got to see that video. I'm not a pro and I always take shots of people who aren't pros. Must be interesting.

Also, unless you're doing product shots of sunglass. TAKE THEM OFF!

Why? What if they're part of the overall look you're going after?
