Portrait Photography Tips for Beginners

If you’re getting started with portrait photography, I recommend checking out this video to get up to speed on the most important things you need to know.

In this video, Chelsea Northrup is joined by Miguel Quiles to break down the top tips for improving your portrait photography. Don’t let the video title fool you, there’s much more information here than just using a one-light setup. The two run down several key points such as how to conduct yourself around models, how to pose with effective communication, why basic lighting can be a positive thing, as well as touching on the technical end of photography.

It’s brought up a couple times here, and I have to emphasis it in writing as well: the gear does not matter nearly as much as you think it might. Knowing how to use the gear you do have, and how to be creative to make up for the gear you think you are missing, are very important skills that will benefit you no matter where photography leads you. I check out what’s being uploaded to the Fstoppers Community every day and I’m constantly amazed at the ingenious concepts that people come up with, and many times it’s in lieu of $10,000 worth of photo gear.
