Despite living in Canada for over a year, with countless sleepless nights, hours of driving to remote destinations in bone chilling conditions, I had never managed to catch an aurora……...until this night. With a large solar storm predicted, and crystal-clear cloud-free skies, my friend and I strapped on our snow shoes and headed to an island in the middle of a frozen lake. Not only where we greeted with an aurora, but also the recently discovered atmospheric phenomenon, STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement). This photo contributed to STEVE’s discovery and graced the cover of the scientific journal that published its discovery. Something I am proud of. A night I will never forget, and a photo I cannot afford to lose!
