This could definitely be an awesome shot. I think the reason people are rating it lower, isn't so much the shot, colouring, etc, but more that we can't see the father's face, so we lose a ton of emotion that should be in this image. That's always the hardships of large hats like this, can bring a good shot down.
That's a great point, thanks for pointing that out! I wondered if it was some combination of my connection to the shot or the reaction from the family and I had over valued it, appreciate the comment!
Yes, people who know him personally can fill in the gaps of his facial expressions and overall emotion he's most likely portraying. As we don't know the subject personally, we can only gauge by what we can see and in this case, we can't see his face. I'm sure his eyes are glowing as he looks down at (what I presume to be) his child. If I could see it, then I'd definitely be bumping up my rating. Great work regardless!
