Ginzan Onsen is an old hot spring resort located in central northern Japan. The snow had been falling for a few days so the village was covered with a fresh white layer. The snow picked up in the afternoon, with impressive large snowflakes. I used the flash of my secondary compact camera to illuminate them during the exposure and show them in the image.

Congratulations to the winners!
I really get a Winter feel from this image, David. The orange highlights make me want to jump inside one of those houses to get warm!
Just a slight observation, obviously the shutter speed had to be adjusted, but do you think it might have been worthwhile taking out the blurred people on the left hand side? Just my opinion of course, I still gave this a solid 3 stars - great work!
Thanks Mark! I tried blending several shots to remove the people, but it looked empty. With the umbrellas visible, the viewer understands it is really snowing a lot. It makes me want to go inside these cosy ryokan even more.
Totally get that, David and you've done an excellent job.
fwiw, I think the slightly blurred people with umbrellas add a lot to this scene. It gives a sense of urgency and a life to the scene rather than just a quiet village, especially makes me want to run inside those warm orange houses.
