Unlike a typical indoor studio where lighting can be tightly controlled, photographing the natural world relies more on planning, patience and a heavy helping of luck. I photographed this male Gambel's Quail just as he was emerging from dark shadows into a shaft of afternoon sunlight. Canon's R5 camera combined with the RF 100-500 lens allowed me to capture this unique lighting moment.
