Celeste Caeiro, then 40, worked in a restaurant in Lisbon that planned to hand out carnations to customers on 25 April 1974, the anniversary of its opening. Due to the coup d'état, the restaurant didn't open and the staff were given carnations to take home. On the way, Celeste came across revolutionary tanks in Rossio and, when talking to a soldier, learnt about the ongoing revolution. With no cigarettes or food to offer, she gave them the carnations she was carrying. A soldier put the flower in the barrel of his rifle, and Celeste continued handing out flowers to the soldiers, contributing to the peaceful symbolism of the Carnation Revolution.
