I’ve begun a new series of photographs called “Eat Your Vegetables.” Honestly, if I don’t throw them in a blender with some fruit and a banana, I don’t like vegetables… especially green ones. I am fascinated, however, by their lines and patterns, emphasized in a photograph with a tight crop which removes context, and therefore leans toward abstraction. Abstract, in the general sense, emphasizes lines, shapes, and texture. Some people believe that abstract art must render the subject in a totally non-recognizable manner. Since the camera is designed to capture sharp detail, I’m willing to grant photographic abstraction a wider interpretation. This a photograph of fennel. I had to check that it was, indeed, a vegetable, as I had only known it as a spice… it is a vegetable. And I had assumed from its flavor that it was the primary ingredient for licorice candy, but it is not. Licorice and fennel are two different plants.
