Of all the hundreds of images I captured during our adventure to Kenya this was the one I was most excited and proud to capture. Using a single shot camera with no burst capability made capturing this image so exciting. This Lilac Breasted Roller was hanging out on the tree stump minding his own business as we waited with cameras on high alert waiting for the inevitable colorful take off that was sure to flash us with his beautifully vibrant colors popping out from the neutral tones of the Masai Mara. Everyone else with their high end burst capture cameras sure to get the perfect shot, I, with my single shot camera, knew I had just one chance to capture any sort of usable photo. Mission accomplished.

Impressive for a single shot camera. And the bird has beautiful colours that really pop off the green. Not so much the sky though, minus that vibrant purple, and red/orange. The composition could definitely use work as the bird is leading us out of the photo with no real reason why. Knowing that it's a single shot gives a little leeway here, but sometimes that's all we get. You've definitely made the most of it, but the composition for another shot like this could use work.
Thanks for the feedback, Brad. I always appreciate it. And I definitely agree with you about the composition in a perfect scenario lol. As the photographer of the image I am partial of course and feel it works for this image when you know the backstory and understand that the bird is taking off from the stump therefore giving the stump weight in the photo not that it’s just there without serving a purpose… it completes the story in the fact that the bird is trying to escape my frame before I can capture the shot! Maybe I should have cropped just slightly to bring the balance of the stump and the bird to equal parts away from the left/right edge of the photo and which would balanced the thirds a bit better!
Maybe! But just thoughts from my head. It's still a great photo!
