This alien looking creature is a Cave Crayfish. They spend their entire lives living in complete darkness and are found exclusively in wet underground caves. Over evolutionary timescales, they have evolved not only to no longer need vision, but also not even the pigmentation in their exoskeleton. As a result, these fascinatingly bizarre animals have extremely reduced eyes, as well as completely translucent bodies. This photo was taken deep underground while standing in the water. I tried several of different flash techniques but due to the glare from the surface of the water, I ended up going with solely a carefully angled flashlight to illuminate the otherwise total darkness of this rarely seen animal's home.
