I shot this back in July of last year in Port Hueneme, CA. The Chief of Police there is a good friend of mine and wanted me to take a large group photo of his entire staff, as well as individual portraits. I met Officer Magana the day before the shoot and asked him if he would let me take an outdoor portrait of him and his K-9 partner, George. We shot this at the beach just before sunset.
I used the sun as my rim light and lit Officer Magana and George with a Godox AD200 flash unit that was mounted with a Phottix Raja 85 quick folding softbox on a light stand about 45 degrees to the left of the subjects. Camera used was a Nikon Z8, using a 50mm f/1.8 lens. Exposure was 1/200 sec at f/8 and ISO 64.
I shot it in RAW and then made adjustments in both Lightroom and Photoshop. I also used Photoshop's Sky Replacement feature to add clouds the background to give the scene a little more vibrancy and to fill up some of the empty space on camera left.
