I consider myself an art director. Whether I am out and about in the street looking for that moment or staging an image, I am always considering the placement of elements. In the case of “Wishful Thinking”, I arranged for a suitable wardrobe for Stevie, and we waited until dusk to create this story at the Nevada desert ghost town, Rhyolite.
The stone structure is about 20 feet square, and it’s received a lot of mistreatment by visitors (broken windows etc). The “BROTHEL” signage in the window begged a story. There is a window opposite the one that our wishful thinker is gazing through, so in that window I placed an SB800 facing into the building. The speedlight was triggered remotely, TTL, with Pocket Wizard Flex5s. And of course, the expressive Stevie nailed an apprehensive pose. I am a single light kind of person, that one light producing a dramatic, noir-ish, evocative, and perhaps amusing, story. Nikon D800 + Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8
