GoPro’s latest action cam caused a little bit of a stir when it was released last year, bringing an insane level of digital stabilization to 4K footage. DJI then shook things up by launching its mooted GoPro killer, the DJI Osmo Action. How do they compare, and which one should you buy?
Gene Nagata (a.k.a. Potato Jet) has been putting both cameras through their paces since their release and has put together a comprehensive comparison in this short video. You might think that the Osmo Action is the obvious choice over the HERO7 Black given its front-facing screen and slightly lower price, but as Nagata explains, there are a few idiosyncrasies that might make you think again. DJI may have made a dramatic entry to the world of action cams, but GoPro has ironed out many kinks that seem to make the HERO7 Black that little bit more usable. That said, there will almost certainly be some firmware updates on the way from DJI, another tricky factor to take into consideration.
Whichever gets your choice, it’s an interesting time for the action cam market, with GoPro under even more pressure now that DJI has started to muscle in on its market.
If you’re thinking of investing or own either one of these cameras, please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Less picture quality but with 1 second lag front screen gimmick... Thanks but will wait for the version 4 as usual with DJI product. The client IS the beta tester.
The field of view is enough for me to stick with gopro. Yes, dji makes way better drones, but that super wide field of view is awesome.
i have been going back and forth between these two. i loved the way you described differences between them. if i had to choose i would go for the Go Pro 7
