I've always seen SanDisk and Lexar as the two main companies when it comes to camera media. Having used Lexar for some time now, I'm always excited to see what the company releases given my success with them in the past. This week they have shown a few new products for a variety of uses from CCTV to action cameras, to still photography and filmmaking.
New Micro SD Card Readers
With mobile content becoming the most used format for sharing information, it's no wonder that Lexar has released the M1. The M1 will be of interest to on-the-go filmmakers as it allows you to interface your Micro SD cards with Android or other Micro-USB devices. GoPro and Sony Actioncam users will appreciate this for quick edits away from the desktop.
Alongside the M1, Lexar has made the C1: a Micro SD card reader utilizing the new USB-C connection that is becoming more and more prevalent on laptops and desktops alike. Pricing is set to be $12.99 for the C1 and $9.99 for the M1. No official availability date has been given.
256 GB High-Performance 633x Micro SDXC UHS-I Card
A perfect match for the new GoPro Karma drone, Lexar is showing off a 256 GB Micro SD card. The primary attraction to this card will be its ability to store (roughly) nine hours of 4K video. This equates to (again roughly) 36 hours of HD video. For those all day shoots with your new GoPro toys, this card has you covered. Other than the size, this won't be anything new to those of you that have been shooting on 64 GB and 128 GB 633x cards from the company in the past.
High-Endurance Micro SD UHS-I Card
Alongside the high capacity 256 GB Micro SD, Lexar has a solution for surveillance cameras that will require more longevity than storage space. The new High-Endurance Micro SD is rated for around 12,000 hours of 24/7 1080p recording. That's 500 days or almost a year and a half of a recording life cycle. That's pretty incredible. These cards will be available for $24.99 in 32 GB and $39.99 in the 64 GB flavor.
"Works With GoPro" Verification
GoPro has always listed GoPro approved cards as a way for users to ensure their storage media can handle the cameras file size and data stream. Now, Lexar is officially labeling some of their products with the "Works with GoPro" label. These products, including the Professional 1800x, 1000x, and High-Performance 633x Micro SD cards, have been tested extensively to ensure full compatibility and the highest level of performance for the fastest write and read speeds.
C20c and C20m Jump-Drives
Like the M1 and C1 Micro SD card readers, Lexar is manufacturing two new thumb drives featuring the same USB-C and micro-USB connections. While cloud computing and storage has become a vital tool in many traveling photography and video workflows, having a small hard drive for file backups are important. When you factor in the micro-USB compatibility for mobile users, this may be a powerful storage option for those taking advantage of the incredible phone cameras and photo apps that support raw file types. Pricing for the C20c is $27.99 (32 GB), $39.99 (64 GB), and $69.99 (128 GB). The C20m will be $21.99 (32 GB), $34.99 (64 GB), and $54.99 (128 GB).
While storage is often the last thing many photographers think about when it comes to purchases, it is a vital piece of our workflow and these new products look to be promising additions to many kits for a variety of purposes. Although availability has yet to be announced, these will likely show up on shelves soon to go alongside the enormous amount of new products that are being announced this year at Photokina.
Those look great, specially the USB OTG Type C dongle :)
