Travel Light, Shoot Heavy: We Review the Falcam TreeRoot Quick Lock Lite Tripod

With so many carbon fiber travel tripods on the market, it's hard to know which is right for you. However, Falcam has just released its latest TreeRoot tripod, which will turn some heads.

Compact and Durable

The Falcam TreeRoot Quick Lock Lite tripod is a small, lightweight tripod built with high-quality T300 carbon fiber. It features nine layers of reinforcement and can hold up to 40 kg. This durability shows, as I've tested similar tripods—such as the Peak Design Travel Tripod—and had to swap them for something sturdier. The TreeRoot Quick Lock tripod is much sturdier and more durable for its size and weight, measuring a mere 47 cm when folded up and weighing only 1.3 kg. As a landscape photographer, this compactness is precisely what I need when hiking up mountains or into forests. When it comes to durability, this tripod rises above its competitors. It features well-designed twist locks that do not break or jam, regardless of what you put the tripod through. I've seen so many tripods from competitors returned due to broken twist locks when I used to work at a camera store. However, after a few rainy and muddy sessions (as is the way in the UK) photographing forests, I'm pleased to say that all twist locks are still in complete working condition despite being covered in mud.

Tripod Head

As I unpacked the tripod for the first time, the small head caught my attention as it looked much bigger in the images. But don't be mistaken—the head is well-designed, durable, and can hold up to 5 kg in weight. The weight limit should be enough for any small to medium-sized camera fitted with a lens like a 24–70. Surprisingly, my Canon R5 C with a 16–35mm was stable and didn't cause the ball head to slip. However, if you're using a small and lightweight camera like the Fujifilm X-T5 or Sony a6xxx, the Falcam TreeRoot Quick Lock tripod is an excellent accessory, as those cameras are well within the weight limit.

The head features a snap-in mounting system with a push-to-lock button that secures the Arca-Swiss-designed quick-release plate in one action, making it easy to attach and release your camera. The head also allows you to quickly move the camera from a horizontal position to vertical by simply unlocking the head. And if shooting panoramas is your thing, this head simplifies the process with the degree markings found on the side of the head. The only drawback to having a compact travel tripod of this nature is the noticeable absence of any built-in spirit level—a price to pay for having a small and lightweight tripod.

This is a great tripod if you're after something compact, sturdy, and well-designed. With the additional mounting areas, this tripod not only stabilizes your camera but can also hold a light or monitor. The design was well thought out and feels like a quality product.
