A New Nikon Mirrorless Camera and Lens Are on the Way

Nikon's mirrorless lineup is about to expand a bit, as rumors have it that next week, the company will be announcing at least one new camera and lens and possibly even more. Both the lens and body are expected to be quite affordable.

The announcement, expected on July 21, is likely to bring a new camera, the Nikon Z 5, as well as a new lens, the Nikkor Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 (along with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters). The Z 5 is likely to have a 24.3 MP sensor, 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a hybrid AF system with 273 AF points and eye detection (including animals), 4K video, dual card slots, and dust- and weather-proofing. Price-wise, it looks to slot between the Z 50 and Z 6. The Nikkor Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 lens looks to be a cheap (likely kit) lens that may end up pairing with the Z 5. There are also rumors of two other lenses possibly coming as well — possibly a 50mm f/1.2 and 14-24mm f/2.8. I fully expect Nikon to be readying higher-level Z bodies fairly soon as well, particularly with Canon pushing hard with the R5 and Sony readying the a7S III. It looks like things are about to get exciting!

An affordable camera to get people to buy into the system is probably smart.

I was saying to my wife last night that at the rate it is going it may come to the point only Sony and Leica will be left.

That would be depressing.

Yeah, but perhaps inevitable. I saw a year on year chart for global camera sales and it's bad.

Makes sense though. The completion is already on 2nd 3rd and 4th generation mirrorless in full frame. Their price for the z50 is significantly higher then the canon entry level. I have been thinking about trying L-mount with Panasonic DC-S1R. I wonder where the updated Z6 and Z7s fit in, is one of them the camera they are going to announce?

Chris, surprised you say that. The canon apsc with a different mount, scant support and sans a viewfinder costs as much as the Z50. The only other that’s as good, is the Xt30. But that’s not weather sealed with a much slower AF.

When a customer enters a best buy or is shopping online for their first camera and the entry level price is $200+ difference. They're going to go with Canon especially with the vlogging kit that's been promoted for under $700. They will not be properly educated with what specs are relevant to them. They see the basics are there. Same when a d3500 is a bit steeper then a rebel t6. They lose all their grassroots sales in DSLR, and I thought the canon m50 came with an electronic viewfinder. I am pro Nikon I'm just saying other brands have been producing a lot more than them at better price points. Nikon is mission the lowest price point interchangable mirrorless, a mid range and pro. On top of that they still don't have a native z mount macro lens. And if they come out with a 50mm 1.2 that will just be crazy since that have a 1.4, 1.8 and a 58mm noct.

The Z50 is a very good value for the money. I walk around with one nearly every day where as I would usually have left the D750 at home. Its pictures with the light-weight kit lenses are a little bit noisier than the D750, but it is a fair compromise for the price.

While the other manufacturers are releasing high end cameras nikon is going in the opposite direction.

At least they are rumored to be releasing 2 teleconverters for lenses that do not exist.

It would be super cool if they'd start shipping the 70-200 that they promised around a year ago.

I'm intrigued by this, my D7100 is getting very, very long in the tooth as they say and the z6 price point is just a little out of reach. While the z50 is interesting this has definitely peaked my curiosity, that and the rumored z6s...I've been feeling a bit ignored by Nikon with all these new cameras coming out by others like Canon and Sony.
