Viltrox has added a Z-mount AF 35mm f/1.2 to its LAB series, and it’s safe to say that the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z-Mount Lens has hit the market with a strong impression. From its standout optical clarity, confident autofocus, and premium build, there’s a lot here that deserves attention. If you’re curious about how this full frame, large-aperture lens performs in a variety of shooting scenarios, this review might be of interest to you.

Viltrox continues its impressive momentum in the photography world with the announcement of the AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z. This fast prime arrives as a premium yet accessible option for Nikon Z-mount users who demand exceptional optical quality, fast autofocus performance, and robust mechanical design.

During my time with the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z, this focal length naturally pushed me toward architecture and street documentary work. Many of my images feature brick walls, building facades, and urban textures—scenes that are perfect for evaluating real-world sharpness, contrast, and micro-detail. Shooting in these environments allowed me to see how the lens renders repeating patterns, fine textures, and depth while still maintaining subject separation and clarity at wider apertures. It proved to be a compelling lens for capturing the character of the city just as much as the people within it.

The Optics

The “LAB” designation reflects Viltrox’s ongoing commitment to high-precision lens development, and the 35mm f/1.2 delivers exceptional clarity across the frame. The design includes:

  • 15 elements in 10 groups
  • 5 ultra-low dispersion elements
  • 3 high-refractive index elements
  • 2 large-diameter aspherical elements

Class-Leading Sharpness at Any Aperture

One of the standout qualities of this lens is its sharpness. Even when used wide open, the AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z produces impressive clarity. Stopped down, edge-to-edge sharpness becomes even more pronounced, making this lens a great option for landscape shooters, architecture photography, and any scenario that demands precision.

Premium Build Quality

Viltrox’s LAB series has become synonymous with durability, and this lens continues that trend. A solid, premium build gives the 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z a reassuring professional feel. Constructed with a sturdy magnesium-aluminum alloy, this is a robust lens with high-impact resistance and advanced dust and splash protection. This lens is ideal for photographers working in varied and challenging environments who need a lens that can withstand demanding conditions.

There is an LED screen and two customizable focus-hold buttons on the lens itself, along with a smooth aperture control ring and a focus range limiter. You’ll find a refined exterior finish to complete the package, balancing functionality with high-end aesthetics.

Fast, Confident Autofocus Performance

In fast-moving shooting environments, autofocus reliability is a must. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z is equipped with an advanced Dual Floating Focus System and a HyperVCM motor, promising a 150% improvement over standard STM motors. This lens is engineered for rapid and accurate AF performance, helping photographers and videographers lock onto subjects with confidence. This applies in low-light environments, too, as I found out when I visited the Christmas markets in my local city.

Pricing

Taking the craftsmanship and performance into account, the launch price of 999 USD / 999 EUR / 959 GBP / 1,449 CAD / 169,200 JPY feels appropriate. The lens is priced in a way that reflects its quality while still offering solid value.

What I Liked

  • Fast and accurate autofocus
  • Exceptional wide-open clarity, with images that feel crisp and feature beautiful bokeh at f/1.2
  • Impressive sharpness suitable for high-resolution sensors
  • Premium build quality that feels robust and reliable

What Could Be Improved

  • Potential for slight vignetting at f/1.2—common at such fast apertures, but worth noting
  • The lens is heavier than I would like at 2.14 lbs, though understandable for an f/1.2 lens

Final Thoughts

There are few focal lengths that are as universally loved as 35mm. Paired with an ultra-fast aperture, this lens becomes a true all-arounder in its class. The Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z-Mount Lens excels in low-light environments, producing clean, bright images without requiring high ISO settings. With its combination of optical clarity, impressive sharpness, high-end build quality, and fast focusing capabilities, the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Z-Mount Lens enters the market at the end of the year, poised to hold position as one of the most compelling Z-mount releases of 2025. For photographers seeking a versatile, premium prime that performs brilliantly across a broad range of shooting situations, this lens stands as an exciting option.

Yes I have been looking at the Viltrox 35 F1.2. With the possible exception of the penguin shot, your images sort of miss the mark on a key question about an F1.2 35mm lens. All the shots could easily be taken with any other 35mm. The reason people who like 35mm might want to look at the inconveniences of a largish F1.2 is to use a 35mm but still be able to isolate the subject.
While I am not in the market for any new lenses, I am curious about 35mm because the only thing I (possibly) lack is a 35mm prime with lots of character and flexibility. I can’t see enough in your review and images (even though they are very decent images) which provides a deep enough dive into why anyone would want the F1.2 instead of an F1.8 or F1.4 35mm.
