Sony Announced today, the newest addition to the acclaimed G Master full-frame lens line, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM (SEL3514GM)The 35mm range is a well-loved choice for prime lenses which is why the FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is definitely a lens that many Sony Full-frame shooters across various genres have been waiting for. The newest G Master lens comes in an extremely compact and lightweight design and delivers first-class image quality and beautiful bokeh for a broad expressive capability.
Joining the reputable line of G Master lenses is a 35mm which is one of the most favored focal ranges by photographers of varying genres and style. This 35mm takes a spot among the G Master prime lenses, joining the FE 24 f/1.4 G Master, the FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master, and the FE 135mm f/1.8 G Master. Designed with a maximum opening of f/1.4, the 35mm G Master offers unique perspectives with a narrow depth of field, outstanding low-light performance, and beautiful background blur.
According to Sony Electronics Asia Pacific Digital Imaging Division General Manager, Ryo Ochi, the 35mm f/1.4 G Master was designed intricately with exquisite resolution, intelligent focus technology put together in a small, lightweight design that does not compromise on image quality.
G Master Resolution in a Compact Form
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM comes in a mere 524 grams, 96mm in length, 76mm barrel diameter, and a filter diameter of 67mm. An included reversible lens hood is also included which adds very minimally a few centimeters to the length. Among the smallest of the G Master lenses, this brings extraordinary resolution, gorgeous bokeh, and outstanding focusing performance all in the palm of your hand. The FE 35mm f/1.4 GM delivers stunning contrast and great resolution through advanced optical technology with 2 XA (extreme aspherical) elements for maintaining superb resolution across all corners of the image. An ED glass element, among other optical refinement elements, suppress chromatic aberration and fringing for optimal image output.
The lens packs an almost circular aperture constructed with 11 aperture blades that contribute to the uniquely striking “G Master bokeh” that makes images beautifully stand out.
Advanced and Precise Focusing
Precise auto-focus and tracking are assured through two of Sony’s XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that provide high thrust efficiency for an accurate and adaptive performance that assures precision focusing from any distance for the best image output at even high frame rates.
Full Professional Control and Ergonomics
The 35mm G Master lens allows for full control with a dedicated focus mode switch, a customizable focus hold button that can be assigned for other custom functions through the in-body menu, and an aperture ring with switchable click stops that can be turned off for fluid operation in video shooting. The FE 35mm f/1.4 GM was built with a dust and moisture resistant design along with a fluorine front element for repulsion of water, oil, and other elements.
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 G Master lens will begin to be available at the end of January 2021 in some countries.
What a privilege to be bored by this launch, because of an abundance of options :)
I'm gonna disagree... I've been waiting for this to come out for quite some time. Unless you're adapting non-Sony lenses, the "abundance of options" you're referring to are 3 lenses: Sigma, Sony-Zeiss, and Rokinon. The Rokinon is a non-starter for me due to their history of extreme copy variance (of which I have personal experience). The Sigma is just too damn big (a half-pound heavier). And surprisingly, the Sony-Zeiss version also has a reputation for copy-variance (specific to the 35 1.4, not all their lenses) as well as inconsistent autofocus. Even more surprisingly, the GM was announced at $200 LESS than the Sony-Zeiss.
I won't be pre-ordering or anything as I've got other lenses, but it's at the top of my list. I've purposely held off on getting a 35mm 1.4 because I knew there would eventually be a GM version. If it lives up to the quality of the 24mm GM, I think there's a pretty good reason to be excited about it. And I'm not usually much of a gear-head.
True, it's a very important focal length for a fast prime. Great that Sony has delivered a no-compromise, premium option!
This lens will have to be nothing short of spectacular to rival the sigma 1.2. It is hands down my favorite lens and better than any of my native Sony lenses. The weight is a complete non factor for me.
Either a 135mm GM for a bit more or a 35mm GM, hm. 135mm GM flickr pix are just so tack sharp it's hard to beat.
