Sony Announces a Smartphone That Shoots 20.7MP Photos and 4K Video

Sony seems to be joining in on the Smartphone camera revolution as they introduced the new Xperia Z2 today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. With a whopping 20.7MP for photo and 4k resolution for video, the little thing seems to pack a punch. Even though there is usually quite the uproar of smartphone hate, this new device is kind of interesting.

On top of having the 20.7MP and 4k video, the phone is also waterproof. That would definitely make it quite handy for bringing on your trip to the Bahamas for the Fstoppers Workshop. “We have redefined the smartphone once again with our Camera. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting,” is what Sony’s Managing Director of Sony Mobile Communications Oceania, John Featherstone, was quoted saying. I really do not try to push phones on to people over their cameras but all around these features seem pretty nice and I would not mind having the Xperia for this alone. It seems like the next set of features we will be seeing in the new phone releases will have a focus on 4k video, even though it does not seem very necessary, I suppose it is nice to have.

According to news.com.au the Xperia Z2 will have a slew of new features that include a “Timeshift mode” which will allow people to record a video in 120 fps and then make certain portions slow motion kind of like what the iPhone 5S does. The phone will have a 5.2-inch Full HD display which Sony claims the color to be “as close to reality as possible.”

I still don’t have any plans of getting rid of my DSLR for a high MP smartphone that packs in 4k video as well. But, I wouldn’t mind having one on me just to carry around for when my DSLR is not with me.

What do you think of this new product from Sony?

As these phones get better and better tech. with cheaper in price, I'm starting to feel like I'm getting ripped off in the DSLR side of technology.

Where are the moderately priced medium format cameras?
Why is a couple of mm bigger sensor 100 times the cost?
At this rate if we wait 2 years there is going to be medium format phones

Eh? A couple of millimetres? I don't know what you are smoking, but
this is the Exmor RS CMOS sensor featured in this phone:

A full frame sensor featured in a 5D/D800 measures 36x24 mm...

Not comparing phone sensors, sorry for the confusion. Just the FF size to the MF size, which is a 56% difference but a 400% more cost.

The next version of the Pentax 645D looks like it's going to be a pretty good trade-off between 35mm flexibility and MF IQ at a relatively reasonable price of around 10,000. I wouldn't expect the prices to get much better than that.

In regards to "medium format phones," don't confuse sensor size with megapixel count; smartphones are essentially plateaued at a certain sensor size due to their physical limitations.

why the fuss? lol. simply get yourself a used medium format on ebay. I see the hasselblad h3d-31 - h3d-40 go from 3k-10k.

Ive got note3, photos taken with phone looks ok on this 5 inch screen, transfer them on ya 24 inch screen monitor and its all different story, i think phone makers got years and years till its actually close

Awesome! Even more pixels to exploit the crappy sensor and lens technology. I'll be happy when people stop talking about one aspect of technology as if it was more important than others.

It seems easier to put more megapixels in a tiny phone than it is to make it good in high ISO. Just create a phone camera with something like 8 mpixels and good ISO up to 3200 or something like that and I'll be happy to buy it

That's a nice phone btw!

Battery life, 23mins?

The Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone already shoots 41 megapixels photos (almost double this Sony one). And is much more intuitively designed with deeper zoom and comes with a camera grip.
