What Was The Best Camera of 2023?

The last few years have seen remarkably fast progress in camera technology, and 2023 was no different. What was your favorite camera of the year?

Coming to you from Park Cameras, this interesting video essay takes a look at the best camera of 2023. Last year's surprise favorite, the OM System OM-1, set the bar high, raising anticipation for this year's top pick. The criteria for selection are personal and subjective, focusing on everyday usability, experience during use, and the camera's suitability for various photography genres. Nonetheless, the debate reflects the evolving needs of photographers, highlighting the importance of versatility in a modern camera. For instance, the need for good video quality and excellent image stabilization for handheld work are becoming increasingly paramount as the demand for an all-rounder, hybrid cameras increases.

Several cameras are evaluated, including the Panasonic Lumix S5 II, Canon EOS R50 and R8, and several Sony models like the a7C II, with each discussed regarding its unique features and suitability for different photography styles. The Nikon Z8 emerges as the standout choice, impressing with its balance of photo and video capabilities, handling, and overall user experience. I definitely agree, as the Z8 is, in many way, a lower-priced and more portable version of the already highly impressive Nikon Z9, though the Sony a9 III certainly gives it a run for its money.

Without a doubt, 2023 was a great year for camera enthusiasts, and I suspect 2024 will be more of the same. Check out the video above for the full rundown.

Comparing apples to oranges. Not every manufacturer released a camera in the same segment this year. And you can't compare a high-end professional camera like the Nikon Z8 to an entry level EOS R8 or even a low-end entry level APS-C like the EOS R50. Different target consumers, different price points, different cameras.

The best camera of 2023? The one that you use.

I'd say the Z8 strikes the best balance of capability, style and price. It would be my pick for camera of the year.
