Macro Testing

I've been experimenting with the macro feature on my Nikkor 35-80 f/2.8. It can only be engaged from the 35mm focal length, which means you have to get really close to the subject and the depth-of-field is non-existent. Intellectually, I knew why Nikon's primary macro lens was 105mm, but I never had reason to use one. And yes, I acknowledge that this is getting a bit far afield of this forum's theme but it didn't fit anywhere else I post.

There's a macro group that I'm in. I always like to check out what people are working on.

I think one of the biggest challenges with macro photography is the extremely limited depth of field. Maintaining focus on the essential part of the subject then becomes a challenge, especially out in nature where the slightest breeze can cause the subject to move.

I think you have done a good job here Andrew, especially in the first image. If you enlarge the others I think you'll see that they suffer somewhat from focal point/limitations on DOF.

Good work, it's great to see folks trying things outside of their comfort zone.

As Matthew indicates, it is always good to review the work of those more dedicated to the field just to gain that extra inspiration and understand what is possible.

As for sitting the group, I think we can understand how you may be experimenting here ;-)
