I definitely see a lot of masking strokes around the blocks. Perhaps not CGI, but a composite of some sort. Still, I think this to be more "digital art" than photography.
Here is the original photograph - a piece hanging on a wall at my doctor's office. I did edited in PS and added a gradient. The clipping/ masking could be improved, but this not CGI.
Is what's hanging in his office a picture or are those actual wood blocks in a work of art? It's hard for me to tell. If the latter, I would try it in monochrome and crop out the white canvas.
I must admit that after said consideration I consider it may not be a photo at all but CGI.
