FWIW, I went back and looked at the original NEF (Nikon's RAW) file and what I think you saw in #4 is there, too, which tells me the banding was in the clouds rather than the processing. Maybe Nikon did some in-camera processing; I had thought I'd turned all of that off so I could make those decisions in Photoshop. You are more likely to be correct about #5 as the original NEF was badly overexposed and bears little resemblance to the finished product. #4 had far less processing.
It's also possible it originated from some kind of glare on the lens. The various colors in the bands make me think that could be the case. Either way, it's an interesting effect, almost like a rainbow in a way.
I really like the elements in #1, there's a nice balance between the clouds and almost a story between small and large clouds (I am small but bold, you are large but wispy....).
#2 works well as an abstract (was the cloud really that shape???) and the last very dramatic.
#3 is actually more than six shots stitched together in Photoshop. The others are single exposure images mostly shot at 300mm.
I very much like #2. I spot a large amount of banding on #4 and a small bit on #5.

The glare is a possibility. The sun is directly behind the cloud that makes up the lower-left corner of the frame.
Nice work Andrew.

Are you shooting in RAW of JPG?
He mentioned in the reply to me that he was using .NEF files, so I believe RAW.
Yes, it was that shape. It is a NEF file, which is Nikon's RAW format for my D810.
