Advice? Daughter's 8th grade graduation photo...

My daughter just finished the 8th grade and went to the big dance. I wanted to get a few decent photos (in other words, not with my phone) but, to be honest, I mainly shoot nature and farm scenes.... I've never really bothered with portraits.

I really want this to be good... In your opinion, how is it? What could I do to make this photo better?

Any and all cc is greatly appreciated!

I would just play to your strengths and do a portrait shoot with her in a nature setting. There is nothing wrong with this image, it just wont hold a candle to a nature shoot when there is good light and an interesting background for you to work with.

Thanks, Francisco! I'd definitely like to get her outdoors for more photos, but unfortunately this is probably the last time I (or anyone else) will see her in this dress... not her normal style AT ALL! lol!

Thanks so much for the feedback!

Looks like a well-lit snap shot. Like you just happened to snap a pic when the subject was standing by a window so it looks good. Like looking for just the right light and movement or lack-thereof in a landscape or nature shoot, care has to be taken about where the subject is and what is behind her. In this image, her hands are cropped and there is a distracting pretty painting behind her. If you want to capture what she is wearing, consider a 3/4 shot cut well-above her knees, at her thighs. If you want a portrait to capture how beautiful and young she is at this moment then get close and get her eyes as the center of focus. Keep up the good work.

I have to admit, this was a quick shot with no real planning to it. She was nervous and fidgety, and we were running late. At some point, I’d like to get her to actually work with me to get a well planned portrait.

Thanks so much for the feedback, Joseph!
