First ever attempt

This is my first attempt at ever shooting a portrait and also using artificial lighting. I did some skin retouching and edited the final photo. This was more for fun and to get critiques. The backdrop was in front of my fireplace/TV surround.

I want to expand my knowledge and get into more than just automotive photography even though I still have a lot to learn there as well.

I went and got myself a pretty cheap single light speed light setup for now to see if I like it. Godox Softbox 32x32, and a manual Neewer Speedlight.

Nikon D750
50mm f2 1/250
Speed Light set to 1/32 power.

My wife was thrilled about having me practice on her, hence the expression on her face.

Not a bad start. What were you using as a modifier if any?

The eyes could use more light; the lack of a catchlight is telling.

One of the most important things in portraiture, in my opinion, is engagement from the subject. They don't necessarily have to look directly into the camera to put across engagement, but directly looking into the lens is probably the easiest way to do it.

I have a Godox Softbox, 32x32 that I Bought on amazon.

I probably had it set up too high above her, I'll try bringing the light a little lower and closer to her face and have her look into the lens next time for catch lighting. The other attached photo shows a bit of catch lighting
