Good Advice for New Landscape Photographers

Landscape photography is a popular and well-established genre, and as such, there are certain established practices and advice given to budding photographers. And while a lot of it is good, some can pigeonhole you into styles or techniques that are actually detrimental to your development and the images you create. This excellent video tutorial features an experienced landscape photographer debunking some common advice and showing why you are better off going another way.

Coming to you from Mike Smith, this great video tutorial discusses why telephoto lenses are such an underrated tool for landscape photography. I couldn't agree more with Smith. There is nothing wrong with wide angle lenses; after all, there is a reason so much landscape photography is done with them. However, in a genre where you can't move distracting elements out of the frame, they can be particularly difficult to work with and might not always give you the best image of a scene. A telephoto lens solves that by allowing you to simplify a scene easily. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Smith.
