The Power of Simple Compositions in Landscape Photography

If hop on a platform like Instagram and look at landscape images, you will probably notice that most of the photos are rather intricate, full of a ton of elements and complicated combinations of vibrant colors. And while such photos can certainly be compelling, they are not the only way to approach landscape image compositions. Simple, direct shots can be just as eye-catching. This great video tutorial takes a look at such an approach and offers some useful tips for enacting it.

Coming to you from Andy Mumford, this awesome video will show you an approach to creating simple compositions in landscape photography. As you will see, one of the best tools for this is a telephoto lens. Whereas we normally use a wide angle lens by default in the genre, longer focal lengths allow you to simplify otherwise complex scenes by picking out a single interesting element or two. This also allows you to get many more shots from the same scene, something important when you consider the amount of physical effort often required just to get to a location. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Mumford.
