How to Light and Shoot This Classic Five-Light Hollywood Glamour Portrait

There is something really eye-catching about old-fashioned Hollywood portraits, which had a healthy flare for the dramatic. And while you might not find yourself shooting that style on a regular basis for clients, it can be a fun creative exercise and one that really pushes your lighting and styling abilities to a new level. This awesome video tutorial will take you behind the scenes to learn how to shoot a modern take on the classic Hollywood portrait by using five lights, along with a look at how to complete the look in post-processing.

Coming to you from Lindsay Adler Photography, this great video tutorial will show you how she lit, shot, and processed a five-light portrait to look like a classic Hollywood shot. To do this, Adler employed a Magnum Reflector as the key light, a gridded backdrop light to control spill, two strip softboxes for hair, and a gridded beauty dish to fill in shadows on the face. Though it is certainly a complex setup, it is especially instructive to hear Adler walk you through her thinking behind each light and how they add to the overall shot. It is a fun image that will do a lot to expand your abilities. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Adler.
